City Council – Garbage/Recycling outcome

The results of the City Council meeting last night have Republic Services continuing as the provider for garbage and recycling pickup in Piedmont. Backyard service will be the default with curbside pickup as a subscription option – for a discount. Additional recycling items are to be picked up (beyond what we can currently recycle), as well as separate weekly green waste and food waste. Unlimited recycling and green waste will be included at no extra charge.

Beach was mentioned toward the end of the meeting, when after the vote one of the councilmembers said, “The expanded recycling we’ve just approved is what the Beach students were asking for.” Hopefully any residents that are able will opt for the less expensive curbside option which will further decrease the fumes from trucks idling to pickup garbage and recycling from people’s backyards.

The new contract goes into effect on July 6, 2008. Republic Services will be providing more information on the subscription changes before then.
